mate having owned a saragosa 10k (which i had no issues with at all) and using the clash for a month or two. my decisionc is the clash hands down. i like reading Alans reviews but find he reviews pure engineering and not the fishability of a reel.

there are two major points that i like the clash over my gosa

size and weight- you basically getting a reel that will hold as much line in a package that is both smaller and lighter

start up drag - very impressed here even when we had it pushing 14kg through a stickbait rod- my saragosa would put out only about 10kg of drag before loosing a seamless start up.

it simply preformed well above its price point

To be fair he never said the Clash is a bad reel. Small faults easily fixed and wouldn't affect everyone. It's just not a compelling reason not to get a Shimano in the same price range, so it comes down to personal preference.

All of my reels are Shimano. Not because I'm a fanboy, but because they are widely available in NZ, with service and support, the range covers literally every need I have or could have, and the reels are generally well engineered. The one Penn reel I think has a real point of difference is the Torque due to it's apparent old school longevity. Having said all that I would certainly buy the Clash over the Spheros for the right price, or if it matched the rod better.

I don't read too much into the reviewers but they know more than me. But more to the point Alan Hawk has left many companies red faced with threatened legal actions etc. I don't think you could realistically doubt his integrity but maybe others who know as much him could. Anyways...

My main point being with the Clash is the sticker issue(hence the LOL

) if its made in China just say so don't try so hard to hide the fact like that.

As above nice king on a stickbait mate who cares what reel great fun.

While some rate his reviews.... I would tend to read a little more into the general consensus around some of his more recent ones. reading that one really makes you wonder a bit.

Alan Tani is the man, read through this thread on his forum and it's a little more of an eye opener for you on Alan Hawks more recent reviews where he has given thumbs up for reels with major failings etc...

Make your own minds up but I know many happy people with clash reels.

I'm using a Penn Clash 5000 on a Pflueger Trion I got from Mike at TopCatch Whangarei.

Saw the review of the reel from Alan, not sure how much the issues he found will affect most people. If the roller assembly is fine, they won't open it much and therefore the screw won't abrade the roller housing. Still, good to know and I'll put a washer on mine in case.

Anyway, I'm not very experienced but love the set for lighter stickbaiting and landed a 12kg off the kayak the 2nd time I used it so pretty happy. That's not exactly a long term test but you need to be on the water to catch fish so I try to spend more time fishing than reading these days Tongue

Hey Worksux, are you going to be using it for topwater fishng from a boat or landbased? and what size fish are you looking at targeting?

One thing to consider is lures you wll be using(weight), as matching the rod to the lures is one of the more important things, have tried one of the 10-15kg Penn reloads in a shop(tip & loaded up) and even that was fairly stiff in the tip to call a 'stickbait' rod, would be fine for poppers & heavier stickbaits, but may struggle to work even some larger stickbaits if the 15-24kg model is even heavier than that.
