Deepsea , reef off southern end of Challenger excellent for kingies. However also excellent for Bronze Whalers , many fish taken off us spearos from here. This happens far more at this spot than out at Flat rock which is a little odd eh.

Not doing the big F this year. So far as hot tips go, well..........

For a start it looks as tho the wether will win the first day or so but the increasing swell should help things along for the rest of the tourny. Tucked up under the cliffs near the end of Takatu could be the shot for a good king this time of year although the back of Waiheke is going to be less crowded. There is some really good current rips out / in past blubell and elephant points. Bluebell pt has a good little reef running out to the south of it and there are some great options there for a change of light snapper or kingie once the day becomes day proper. Maori rock, is another crowded option. If it were me and I had the time/ boat etc it would be up to that rock of Mr Simpsons for the day mmmmmmmmm

Some really excellent patches of deep foul all through this area and from memory when I was fishing comercially it was riddled with the good stuff. Bloody exposed but so safety first of course. GD LUK

There are other reefs SE of the main rock, easy to spot on the local chart and with the sounder. Looks mighty impressive from on top with electronics, so must be awesome below. Have pulled some big fish from certain parts of these reefs in the past. This year hasn't really provided the circumstances but I'll get to it. I have noticed kingies doing laps too. Have you dived the reef south of Challanger Island - Kawau? Its about 100m south and is normally covered in sign and Butterfly Perch. Do Butterflies need perches?

Hi Damian ,

I spoke to Reidfish today. Very little seen but vis was crap as soon as you dived so very hard to see anything. They were just diving around Flat rock itself as far as I know.

Kingfish action has been very quiet with full moon - very dead at Great Mercury and Aldermans last week for any decent pelagic action.

I noticed a heap of dirty water north of Whangaparaoa on Saturday too. all the eastuaries on the coast have had a bit of a flush with some of that heavy rain a few days ago. Did you dive close to the rock itself or on some of the pins nearby? see any snapper?

Flat Rock (behind Kawau) was dirty as a dirty thing on Saturday, just in case anyone was keen to have a swim there.  Vis 4-5m on surface, deteriorated as tide started running out, 2m at depth.

Lots of sweep, mackeral, etc, but only saw one school of kahawai and no kings. 

Might have to try Ruahine this weekend I think.
