I've had good luck using small stick baits to target kahawai. Sometime KY will take to anything.....other times they can be real fussy.
And I think more often than not the size of the lure is often the critical factor....on that day.

The Busted range- 45 gram and 75 gram- they are solid with a cup face(like a popper) and water jets- creates a bubble trail

i put a very small piece of KY bait on to give the lure a faint smell

Was having some fun with casting a small(12cm) popper around local estuary flats, got a couple of follows though not sure of wether it was kahawai, or trout. Whilst i got two "grabs" nothing connected, don't think white with red head a go'er, put other colours might, anybody know of 8-12cm poppers available in nz that do work on kahawai?
