Cheers for the feedback. I wouldn't call it a grunt stick. Definitely got a nice soft tip for working the bait. I am targeting kings LBD but tbh I'd be happy if anything grabbed a hold of the stick bait lol. I never paid any attention to the cast weights on my sb rods either. Im actually going on a capt phil charter in a months time sid and will definitely be taking it. Haven't used it to much yet as the boys aint got stick bait rods.... just jiggers and live baiters. I fish regularly with a demon blood and it an all rounder, well not totally. I found that casting heavy poppers 150 grams very hard work and that is about the max i would go on that rod. I have tried 200grams but cannot get distance in fear of breaking the rod.  Prefered weights 80-120 work best in that rod. It work stickbaits in the 120gram range quite well.

I would expect that rod to be a little on the stiff side for straight stick bait use. Which means you will need to start out gentle and work out what the upper limit of effort is that you can put into the bait. How the bait is rigged also affects action, bigger hooks will generally quieten a bait down if it tumbles too easily.

There are a lot of variables in the action. What lures you are using, whether they are floating or sinking and weights etc. General purpose kingfish stick baits for NZ use are usually in the range of 90 to 150gm. smaller baits, generally dont cast as well, and bigger baits are heavy (obviously).

Use the baits you have and just practice, if learning I would reccomend doing a charter with a good stickbait skipper, like extreme from Tauranga etc..

Not just any old charter skipper but someone who does a lot of stickbaiting.

Thats a pretty wide range....the spec range is a guide  but i would say you will have a sweet spot between 120 -200 ......the lure weights you mention should work fine.......the heavier you go the more distance you should get and the more tired you will get over the day.......once you start going over 150g it starts getting harder work.....The spec is basically saying "chuck what you want!"to a certain degreeBig smile.......sounds like a grunt stick.......does it have a soft tip for stickbaits? 
Cant see the point in going over 200 grams imho........150 is my max....presume you are after kings?

Hi there. Total noob when it comes to stick baiting. Ive been looking at you tube trying to get my technique sorted which is going well I think but just a question regarding stick bait weights? Im using a demon blood 762h and it says casting weight 90-230g. What is the best stick bait weight to use? I've got a couple of 100 & 120g lures and thinking these are ideal but not sure.
