Hello team. Planning my move back to NZ after a few years in Oz. I was only just starting to game fish in the BOP and east cape areas before moving so my NZ experience is limited but have a full set of 50's that I would be brining back with me. In addition, the Qld fishery is pretty focused on the lighter gear so I have a full set of 16's set up for 8kg fishing for the smaller marlin runs we get here.

My question to the group is, should I sell off my 8kg gear while I'm in Qld and there is a market for it, or, is there a light tackle fishery in NZ that I should be looking into?

I''m not a game fisher but plenty of stripies get caught on 10kg. * should be doable. At a guess a typical NZ stripey is around 100kg

Limited market for light line game fishing here. Not saying it's none but here you just never know when that big blue lady fish of a lifetime will take a fancy to your offer so most (including me) like to be prepared for that. Light line fishing is pretty much reserved for the real pros who switch bait and these guys probably not too interested in 2nd hand. My advise flick it.

Thanks for the quick advice. I'll flick em and invest in some other accessories.

If your 16 reels for 8kg are little Tiagra 16's then they make great 15 kg outfits, I have a tiagra 16 with 850m of 40lb hollow braid and about 80m of 15kg mono topshot, great little setup.  Would be great if you had younger kids as it is such a light outfit.

I've got a set of 5 speed master 16s matched to 8kg rods. Braid backed with 8kg top shots. They do hold a boatload of solid braid but I can't really see justifying respooling and trying to make them work as 15kg sets when I've got a full set of 24kg on 50s already. Adding to that I generally run my 2x talica 16s spooled with 24kg braid as an extra rod or 2 when the conditions allow. Otherwise they're jigging sets.

I’d like to comment if I may.
I don’t see a problem with that gear. It’s more a matter of what you want to gain from your fishing experience.
Such as, are you a hunter, is it for meat, a trophy, or your an angler open to the challenges.
Determining what you want to achieve is your key.
Mid range gear, 50 wides and 24 kg plus gear will always serve you well.
But the gear available today gives you beautiful options.
The reels are lighter and well engineered. Braid gives you volume.
Light gear offers challenges for the fisherman’s skill.
You are blessed with all the options you can imagine, crikey… plug in the reel and let it fish for you., just a pun, but it’s a realistic option.
Anyway just my two pence worth.
Good luck with your season. Good to have you back here.
Our water are getting better by the season.
If only th fish coming had heard that all the bait fish had been scooped up to feed carp overseas.
Still cruising in my now sweetas pimped out Southern 755 HT0!

Thanks mate and you're spot on. It's all situation dependent. I started with my 24/37kg gear in Whakatane/Waihau but only got a season in before moving to SEQld. Here the game is all 8kg tags on small blacks to rack up points. It was a social thing so gotta play by the rules. Haven't use my heavier gear here at all really. I'm moving back to Whakatane area but also a working class man so get out when I can. Chasing records on light line isn't on my list right now. I like fish in my fridge. Just sold the 8kg gear for more than I paid so happy with the outcome. 2 weeks until I'm back. Then the process of getting a boat, tow vehicle, etc can start. The funds from the 8kg gear can be reinvested into the shift.

Looking forward to getting back out in the BOP. If anyone is Whakatane based happy to shout the first beer.

The small group of game fishermen I know have never weighed a fish and do not pay any attention to IGFA or clubs. Marlin and tuna are normally filleted on the boat. Of course it's about sport, but also taking some meat home. I doubt you'll experience much in the way of social pressure here.
