Wellington Fishing Report - June 17th, 2021

  • General Saltwater, Wellington/Lower North island

There were heaps of good kingis to around 29kgs and snapper to around 8kg caught out west on the weekend.

Add to this a recent report of a few kingis caught out on the South Coast up around the 30kg size as well as good trevs and snapper down around Sinclair Head, there has been some good action enjoyed over the last week or so.

A nice 7.5kg snapper was caught at Paraparaumu beach by Stuart White last week. Interestingly it was caught at 10am in the morning on his first cast on a new rod.

From the boats out west, there has been a good variety out there species wise with things like frost fish, JDs, warehou, blue mackerel mixed in with solid trevally, tarakihi and bluecod fishing.

Snapper and kingis are still in exceptional numbers up and down the coast. Hunters Bank has been on fire with kingis, warehou, snapper and trevs all added to the mix.

Deeper out, some good blue nose and a few puka were caught at the Trench. The hapuku have still been a bit patchy out west and in the outer sounds, but  well worth a crack for a biggie at this time of the year.

Wellington harbour is still producing snapper off Point Gordan, Ward Island and Eastbourne for the boating fraternity, with some solid surfcasting action reported from at Flat Point recently.

And across the board, plenty of big kahawai have been caught all over the place of late.

From the wairaprapa, surfzcsters have been gewtting among the moki and spotty sharks with the odd snapper cominf from at Whangamoana and the spit.

Boat  fishing has been as good as ever when conditions permit. A friend caught some nice bluenose at Tora last weekend, but like everywhere else at this time of the year, it is a matter of making the most of the weather windows to get out wide.
