Wellington Fishing Report - 7/03/25

Fish peaking

Wow, the fishing is going off! We are certainly in the peak of the great Wellington fishing summer. March/April is probably the best time of the year to fish for snapper, kingfish, hāpuku, kahawai and various gamefish species like tuna and marlin.

Unprecedented fishing in new places has been the theme this year. Some of the hot spots have included Seatoun Beach for landbased kingies and snapper, out wide from Mana northwards for albacore tuna (heaps around), marlin (about eight caught so far), mahimahi and even some shortbilled spearfish. Palliser Bay (surfcasting moki and snapper,) Falcon Shoal (harbour boat fishing) for snaps and kings, and Raumati (snapper surfcasting) have also offered great rewards.

Such a well-conditioned Wellington summer snapper.

The season has been one of the best on record but has had also been running red hot one day and stone cold the next, particularly trying to get onto the snapper. They have been spooked by temperature contrasts and have been potentially doing a bit of spawning as well which has made them tricky to catch at times. It’s been such a pleasure to see many new anglers catch their first moki, snapper, kingfish, tuna etc., this season.

Good luck with your fishing, folks – we are happy to help with tackle, bait, advice, charters, especially for new anglers. Our shop – Pete Lamb Fishing Ltd – is open 7 days a week, at 15 Kingsford Smith St, Rongotai (phone – 043878150 or 0274439750).
