Wellington Fishing Report - 27/12/24

Landbased fishing firing

The surfcasting throughout the Wellington region is going really well at the moment. In Palliser Bay, lots of blue moki up to 6kg are getting caught at Ocean Beach and east of Whangamoana. Now is the time if you've been waiting for some moki action.

Snapper and trevally are getting caught in the same locations as well, and it’s probably some of the best snapper fishing in the harbour for landbased fishos at the moment at many spots in Evans Bay and around Eastbourne. Good numbers have been caught, especially around dusk and after dark.

Yes, the kingfish have also arrived and have been caught in the harbour recently off the rocks and beach. A nice 15kg fish was caught by a surfcaster at Seatoun Beach. Flat Rock and Oriental are worthy places for slidebaiting now. A considerable amount of blue moki have been caught from Seatoun up to Kau Bay (mainly from rocky points).

For the South Coast, I’ve been getting reports of snapper being caught at Breaker Bay Beach and at Lyall Bay. With good clean water, the bigger blue cod (during the day) and good size tarakihi (after dark) come close to shore. Blue moki are getting caught at the usual places like Wainui and Long Beach.

Out west, Boom Rock is holding kingfish. a nice 16kg fish was caught by Jack Henderson the other week after an hour on the moped and an hour's walk to Boom (arriving at 5am). The fish gave an amazing 10-15 minute battle after it spectacularly monsterd a 1kg live kahawai on the surface and Jack had his first kingfish in his pack to tramp back to Makara Beach. Well done bro!

Snapper are getting caught up and down the coast but not in any numbers yet. That may well be about to change (hopefully). Along the Kapiti Coast good numbers of gurnard and kahawai have been around but the snapper haven’t been easy to get onto. There's been the odd nice snapper around but nothing like what's happening in Palliser Bay and the harbour at the moment. Stay tuned, this place could be the next snapper bonanza!
