Mixed bag, but great to be back on the water

Great to be back on the water last week for two days anyway with a mixed bag of fish being one kingfish, large blue cod 44cm,good sized trevally, snapper and tarakihi.

The Thursday went well for some three hours whereas the Friday was good bite time to change at low tide then very quiet and regrettably some bloody ‘coutta hammering our gear but not too bad.

Water temperature is still only 14.5degrees at best even near the Penguin Shoals 13 miles out. The water is pretty green as well , add on to that we are seeing some of the annual “red tides” of what I think is phytoplankton ?

Whales have been sighted up and down the coast and may be Brydes or Minke whales. Have not been able to get a close look.

The number of kahawai schools are becoming greater in number and fairly well scattered from seven miles out to 15 miles. They are often only in small patches indicated by a few terns – see image – but well worth investigating.

There have been some really good-sized snapper caught down near Maketu/Pukehina - one at 19lbs and another at 21lbs, both released. The angler returned to the same area a week later and it was just dead. As we say with fishing, there are never any hard and fast rules at all.

There is ongoing discussion on “finfish” limits and in particular having a perhaps set number of pink maomao stated in the rules. Submissions can be made to MPI website.

I don’t have to remind you all of the damn Covid thing but keep smiling even though it is through gritted teeth ! And of course get vaccinated -no excuses – it is the only way we are going to enjoy our freedom anytime soon.
