Tauranga Fishing Report - 16/05/24

Tarakihi and snapper on the chew

Things are starting to be a bit quieter with the cooler weather as is expected, but when we have got out the fishing has been totally adequate and some nice fish caught in depths from four meters near the shore right out to 110m.

The shallow areas, even with just softbaits, have fished very well with some great-sized snapper chasing softbaits right to the surface. These fish are not huge but in the 3-4kg range – perfect eating size. Further out on the tarakihi grounds, the deeper areas from 80-110 metres have produced good fish which seem to be full of roe. We had one tarakihi that measured 50cm which is the biggest I have seen in recent years.

Also in the mix have been good-sized golden snapper and pink maomao, and there’s been a constant bite time for an hour or two until that change of tide. The water temperature is now around 18 degrees and seems to be rather green even 16NM out, although sometimes an easterly will bring in some blue water. There are not many schooling kahawai to be seen but up until last weekend there still seemed to be plenty of skipjack close in and they are perfect bait size being quite small. On Saturday just gone we saw plenty of skippie action from 7-11NM northeast of the harbour entrance and they were decent-sized patches of fish as well.

The forecast is changing a wee bit this week but it’s looking like that front should pass through quickly and then we should be in for some settled seas. Make the most of the opportunity if you get it.
