Tauranga Fishing Report - 10/01/25

Plenty of action

There is plenty of action happening out there with yellowfin and marlin either landed or released daily and even a juvenile broadbill seen in very shallow water just off Waihi Beach in a couple of metres of water.

Interesting stuff yesterday (7th Jan) when over 23 miles out the temperature was only 19.8 degrees but blue as expected. We were fishing deep (300 metres plus) for bluenose and many of the hills that were productive a few weeks ago were pretty bare. After trying plenty of spots on the Mayor Knolls we did manage five nice gemfish but it was really hard fishing. We covered 60 nautical miles that day to get a result.

On a positive note, I talked to a group of divers who were spearfishing at Motiti Island and they had landed a beautiful kingfish weighing in at 38.5kg. What a beast and well done to those boys.

I have not heard any results on the harbour fishing regarding snapper and trevally but that is not to say they are not there.

On another front, I personally have not heard of any skipjack schools at all but there seems to be a lot of blue mackerel with some being caught on ledger rigs while bottom fishing.

At least the winds from the southwest seem to be decreasing a bit but on the negative side with these continuing, even at a lesser speed, it keeps the temperature down.
