With the weather settling, there’s been some excellent fishing out west.
The toothy vermin – ‘coutta and spiny dogs – have reduced in numbers since the last report to almost ’normal’ levels. In better news, the snapper in 60 metres plus can be found hard on the bite for much of the day.
West and south of west from the Raglan Harbour lead lights is the go with 62 metres plus producing constant catches in the 4-6lb range of prime snapper – the ones that when you fillet them, the knife is left sticky with fat.
Schooling snapper can be found at the 62-metre mark and are in prime condition.
Still in the mix are some plump, healthy gurnard, with most anglers taking home a couple each from their trips to add a bit of variety, and taste, to their table fare. With the snapper coming on board two at a time, nothing much else gets a look in!
All areas 50 metres and over should be fishing well soon with the onset of spring, so be prepared for the next weather window and get out there.
