Better snapper out in the deep
With continued changeable weather conditions of late there has been some good days out here and some hard days too.
The fish are getting slower on the bite in areas with the slightly cooler water. With the right conditions there are some very good snapper to be had, with the larger fish back in depths from 28 meters to 65 meters along with some very nice-sized gurnard.
Catch reports can vary by location on any given day with good fish west and south-west at 65 meters, not so good at 45 meters and lots up the coast in shallower. Pick your tidal flows and moon right and it has been like a spring bin up.
As the water temperature continues to drop the snapper are preferring the oily baits once again if the bite is slow. Spiny dog sharks are turning up now too so pack plenty of extra tackle should you hit them. Keep moving deeper to get away from them if necessary.
In what was the complete opposite, Saturday a week ago was a day out of the box with one local boat reported 17 degrees of water at 65 meters. They encountered flyingfish, caught four kingfish on top water gear and three on the jigs as they busted up the surface, feeding on a bait ball. Good snapper were also taken off the bottom on slow jigs and bait.
