Go deeper to avoid unwanted bycatch

The true winter fishing is on now. The barracouta got a bit bigger over the last week and the spiny dog sharks are in good numbers out to and in the middle ground.

There are nice snapper and gurnard to be had out wide in 65 metres plus, so pack plenty of gear and get out wide when the weather allows. Fishing up the coast in the shallower waters has seen some nice hauls of gurnard and the unwanted spiny dogfish catch less prevalent.

At the moment, oily baits are the go-to with jack mackerel also going well in the mix. If you come across workup in the 40-metre range stay with it when it moves, as there's good kahawai to be had and the snapper are on the bite below as you would expect.
