The fishing is blazing hot out there at the moment - the problem is the weather restricting your opportunities. When conditions allow we have been fishing the workups north of Horn Rock, nailing both kingfish and big snapper on the Daiwa Pirate and Inchiku lures. Colour or action doesn't really matter as most drops you'll get smashed on the way down with bite times lasting for hours!
If you can't get out that far or the westerly winds are humming, there are schools of bait being rounded up by predators both north and south of Whangaparoa Peninsula. Softbaits are the go here for snapper, you'll probably just have to weed through a few kahawai. As always, find the birds and find the fish.
