We've been getting out on the briny intermittently over the last few weeks when the weather has allowed.
The kingfish have now moved out to the further reaches of the Gulf with the cooling water, but good sessions have been had at the top of Coromandel, Great Barrier and Little Barrier. The bait schools are currently hanging out in reasonably deep water north of Waiheke and the Noises.
On the snapper front, there's been some steady fishing around these bait schools along the 40m contour from the cable zone to north of Gannet Rock. The fish aren't massive, but if you find the birds working you can fill the bin reasonably quickly. The best snapper, however, have been found out deeper in the areas north of Anchorite Rock and between Channel Island and Great Barrier (par for the course at this time of year). While it's a bit of a hike, it's normally worth the trip with solid snapper and kingfish schools rounding up pilchards.
Until next time,
Captain Nick
