Coromandel fishing report 290618

29 June 2018

It might be getting cool as the throes of winter set in, but it is time to put on the beanie and thermals and get amongst some of the best fishing of the year.

KINGFISH

The kingfish are in solid winter condition, awesome smoking fish. These strong pulling hoodlums have been inshore among the bait schools when the water is clear, but a bit of fresh water sees them back out wide on the offshore structure, where jigging is working very well.

HAPUKU

The hapuku are holding in 150m-250m and in good numbers at the usual spots. The males are there all milted up waiting for the females to turn up. Two or three hook dropper rigs with a strobe attached and livies or good fresh bait is the ticket for hooking into these awesome eating fish. Our last hapuku trip saw us get into fish up to the 30kg mark.

SNAPPER

The snapper fishing is really hot at the moment, with most fishos reporting good catches on their return, and plenty of fish in the 5-7 kg mark. We had some spearos out last weekend who reported snooping lots of big fish and the best fish went 9.5kg. Softbaiting in 5-15m has been the ticket to some solid snapper.
