Bay of Islands Fishing Report - 29/11/24

Yellowfin tuna and snapper on fire!

Tuna and more tuna! The bay is still abuzz with tall tuna tales and although the pacific bluefin may have gone, it's now all about the yellowfin which have turned up in numbers not seen for a while! Several nice fish have been weighed to date with the heaviest I’ve heard of being around 59kg. Reports also indicate striped marlin caught (but not tagged or weighed), shortbilled spearfish lost at the boat, and mahimahi caught. The game season has definitely started!

Meanwhile, the snapper fishing is also on fire! Last Saturday I was out at the 50m mark, along with 40-plus other boats! Although not a red hot bite, the fishing was consistent with some nice fish in the 10-14lb range being landed. Just yesterday we were out again and encountered some insane workup action from dolphins and gannets. The first drops were smashed and some big fish busted off and then it went quiet. A good day but I think we lost a few jigs to those toothy critters!

Visiting angler Tim from Texas with a tasty pannie caught slowjigging.

The Rockhoppers tournament was held last weekend and for once the weather gods smiled! Around 70 entrants landbased fished for over $8,000 in prizes in a range of categories including measured and released snapper. Everyone had, by all accounts, a great time! Next on the BOI Swordfish Club tournament calendar is the Ice Breaker comp – 7-8th December. With the gamefish about, it’s shaping up to be one of the best ever!

Come into the shop to check out the latest in gear, get your bait, ice and berley, and most importantly, some genuine intel! We are open from 9.00am to 4pm, every day. As always, if you urgently need some supplies after hours just give me a call.
