Bay of Islands Fishing Report - 24/01/25

Awaiting better weather

What is up with this weather? Fishing opportunities have been few and far between due to strong winds and heavy rain! But at least my watertanks are full! At the start of this report’s fortnight, we managed to get out wide and snagged a small yellowfin. Meanwhile, on the same day, young Isla caught a beauty!

Isla, age 11 years, with her first yellowfin tuna, caught fishing with Dad Manny on his boat Shearwater!

I managed to get out early yesterday (Wednesday) and was greeted with lumpy conditions and two longliners for company. I’m starting to wonder if they’ll ever catch their quota and leave? The fishing was very slow with only two pannies in the bin by 11am, then conditions calmed and the bite fired up. An hour later we were heading in with 10 nice pannies destined for four or five dinner tables that night. Between 40-50m out from the middle foul and using heavy slow jigs did the trick!

Nathan, visiting from Scotland, with a nice pannie caught on a slider.

The Cater Marine Small Boats comp has now been postponed twice due to the weather and is now rescheduled for the 8-9th of February. The same thing happened last year and unfortunately, I can’t make the new dates! Next up on the tournament calendar is the Eldorado Marlin Classic comp scheduled for the 30th of January to 1st of February. I hope we can fish this one.

Come into the shop to check out the latest in gear, get your bait, ice and berley, and most importantly, some genuine intel! We are now open from 7.30am to 5.00pm, everyday including public holidays!! As always, if you urgently need some supplies after hours just give me a call.
