Go shallow! Locals, Smithy and ‘The ‘Hammer’, continue to catch some lovely pannies fishing from their kayaks behind the islands. I have all but abandoned my softbaits and slowjigs as the conditions in the middle are usually far from pleasant and if you’re just chasing a feed, then big baits on a strayline is the way to go. Not to say there aren’t some big moochers in shallow too – a couple of weeks ago I landed a 19-pounder that took the bait and just sat there. It didn’t even do a run, and I only knew he was on was when I decided to check my bait!
Yesterday we braved 20-knot winds to get an early fish in as this looked like the only opportunity for a while. In shallow again with baits and we were home by 10.30am with enough to feed the crew.
On the gamefishing front, I joined Team Zeus for a full day about two weeks ago without a single bite. The next day, Zeus skipper Craig headed up to the Cavillis and, while dropping livebaits, hooked up an estimated 80kg striped marlin! It put on a spectacular show and eventually broke off the 100lb leader close to the boat! Think I’ll try a livebait for marlin the next time I get out.

Unfortunately the forecast is not looking great… well that’s an understatement, it looks horrible! The next fishing day looks like possibly Easter Sunday so it's time to check that fishing gear, perhaps respool that old nylon or braid and stock up on some essential supplies. For those school holiday families I would suggest wetting a line wherever you can find some shelter during a lull in the storm. You might be surprised!
Come into the shop to check out the latest in gear, get your bait, ice and berley, and most importantly, some genuine intel! We are now open from 9am to 4pm daily, but close on Sundays at 3pm. We’re still open everyday except for Easter Friday! As always, if you urgently need some supplies after hours, just give me a call.
