Bay of Islands Fishing Report - 020719

02 July 2019

Fish have moved into winter mode. The snapper are either deep or shallow. Stray lining with burley is the way to go in the shallows and using live or large baits will help to target the larger snapper. There have also been good numbers of john dory and trevally around in the shallows so a lively is a good idea while waiting for your stray line to go off.

The 50th International Yellowtail Tournament a couple of weeks ago was a great success with 38 teams competing. The weather was very kind and the four days were fished in extremely calm conditions. That is winter fishing at it's best! Some good fish caught as well as tagged and released, but more importantly a great time was had by all. Looking forward to next year’s event already.

The weather has been harder the last couple of weeks but the fish don’t mind! Nice snapper and fat kingfish have been caught and the Swords are still around! So take advantage of the weather windows and get out there!

The night activity is increasing here in Russell! The squid are around in good numbers and now are getting bigger! A great way to spend a calm winter night.
