Taupo Report
Elevated river levels see spawning fish on the move
The new Taupo fishing season kicks off next week - Thursday 1 July – so why not get the season off to a trophy start by landing your 2021-2022 season licence early. Head over to our 'online licence store' which can be accessed 24 hours a day seven days days a week via the website www.doc.govt.nz/FishingLicence *Note - Internet Explorer is no longer supported so please use an alternative up-to-date web browser.
We are yet to see the prolonged spells of heavy rain this winter that encourage larger numbers of trout to run, however recent pulses of wet weather have elevated flows in major spawning rivers, encouraging plenty of trout upstream. Latest reports confirm that many anglers are catching fresh-run rainbows. That said, it may be a challenge to find fish at times, so it pays to start early, keep mobile and ensure you are fishing deep enough to reach those trout. Also make sure you pop into your favourite tackle store to get the latest advice and tips!
The winter months see an influx of anglers, all keen to connect with hard fighting rainbows. International visitors remain limited, but we anticipate angling pressure will nonetheless grow in key hotspots. Visitors from outside the Taupo Fishing District might benefit from the updated 'where to fish' section on our website. The 'map view' shows the geographical locations of all waterways, so when the hotspots get busy visiting anglers have the information they need to explore a new spot.
Winter limits are currently in place to protect spawning trout so all anglers should ensure they are familiar with these restrictions before fishing. See the Map and Summary that comes with your printed licence or check out the online version here.
We hope you have a great 2021-2022 season. Keep sending us photos from your Taupo adventures and we will feature the best on our Facebook page.
