Taupo fishing report for July 7 to 12

  • Trout, Taupo

My goodness its bleak and I feel like getting into the dryer with the clothes to keep warm! We have had a couple of dull days this week and night-time temperatures have been so low that it’s beginning to feel a little bit like winter has finally arrived!

There has been no rain at all now for over a week and the rivers are low. The rain that fell last week has well moved through and the sediment finally dropped out allowing the fish to move, although they have moved through quickly and were not holding as we would expect.

The fishing though over the past few days has been hard, and with the warmer than normal there are a great number of fish that are holding off the mouths waiting to move when the weather changes.

There’s a southerly change forecast and often that’s just enough to trigger the movement of those fish. Thinking back last year the weather turned in late March and the fish moved with the weather. Those fishing the T/t and the spring fed streams are finding pockets of fish but only ones and twos at this point and it won’t really change until we get a drop in temperature and some rain.

The Tongariro has possibly yielded more fish to the wet liners who have fished the bottom of the river to find the fish. River mouths have enjoyed little wind and anglers have been able to fish to the numbers holding off to the side of the rips.

Few are out in boats as it’s cold and most are working the rivers. The fish are still relatively deep but in great condition when you get them.

Take care on the water and feel free to call for an update, or accommodation, cheers Pete and Stella 073868953 anytime
