Rotoiti producing good fish

The local lakes have been producing some lovely fish lately. The average sized fish has been slightly up on previous years and they have been in fantastic condition with most fish around 6lb on Rotoiti.
The lakes are still relatively cool temperature wise so a wide range of methods will be successful, harling and fly fishing the early mornings and moving to trolling and jigging once the sun gets up.
Pick your days as the spring equinox winds are a pain at the moment but the good days are just unbelievable.

In Lake Rotorua the browns have started moving through the chanel and are up on the shallows chasing smelt. Stalking them with the fly rod and harling are producing good results. These fish are magnificent and will come through in the 7lb-14lb class.

On the ocean I have had more fantastic fishing in the 10-20m in front of Matakana but this is consistent all the way down towards Whakatane. I have been using micro jigs and soft-baits so get out when the conditions allow it is a wonderful time to fish at the moment.
