Rotorua Fishing Report

Shoreline fishing coming into its best.

----- Advertisement -----

Over the last week the region has seen some very changeable weather. We have finally had some heavy rain; the barometer is dropping, and the air temperatures are starting to plummet. While many will put their rods down this is when our winter shoreline fishing is at its best.

A couple of my staff have been braving the conditions and doing reasonably well, some very large fish have been caught as this cold snap has descended on us. On lake Rotoiti, Ruato and the area down through to the pipe have all been holding good numbers of fish. The rain will make daytime fishing more productive but once it passes fish into night or first light in the morning for the best bite times.

Lakes Tarawera, Rotoiti and Okataina all close from Thursday until October 1 to people fishing from boats but stay open to some shoreline fishing which as stated is very good at present. Lake Rerewhakaaitu stays open and is starting to fish well, either from the boat or the shoreline. The area around Gumboot Point is a winter hotspot and will produce good numbers of fish.

We will start heading down to Lake Rotoma to start targeting tiger trout from next week, this is a beautiful lake with very clean water and well-defined weed banks. It is a fantastic place to explore and is well protected from winds so be sure to head down for an explore.

Our local streams close at the end of this month in the upper reaches and most of the rivers and streams in the eastern region shut down also, but the Rangitikei stays open for most of its length, you can obtain a permit to access the forest and the fishing is very good over the winter months. It is one place that the fly fisher can expect a mayfly hatch most days so make the most of it and get out and explore.

Lastly the much-needed rain will be a real blessing for the winter runs of fish heading up the Taupo tributaries, as the rivers drop the fishing will be unreal so make sure you come down and visit the Rotorua or Taupo regions there is still some phenomenal fishing to be had.

Throw on a warm jacket and tight lines...
