Rotorua Fishing Report - June 17th, 2021

  • Salmon, Trout, Rotorua

Over the last week or so the Rotorua region has received some much needed rain. At this time of year the rain and drop in barometer are very good triggers for the fish to actively bite.

The tiny spawning streams and rivulets round Rotoiti and Okataina come alive and the fishing becomes red hot. Ruato through to the pipe has been consistent and the fish are in great shape with many around 4kg in size.

For the boaties, the fish are spread out throughout the water column so a wide variety of techniques are working. Down rigging, trolling and harling have been very good. At this time of year don’t be afraid to fish bright orange and pink patterns as they often encourage a bite over the winter months.

Jigging and soft baiting is still going well on Rotoiti, from the point at Ruato all the way back to the pipe and dump. Smelt flies as in grey ghost and jack sprat are the consistent performers but be sure to fish a darker parent on the bottom and come up to two smelt flies.  The darker pattern will often catch those very large koura eating fish that we all dream of.

On the streams we have two weeks left before they close to fishing until October 1st.  The Ngongotaha has been fishing very well and some lovely browns are still being caught, the stream is now stacking up with rainbows as these squally fronts come through. The fish are between 2-5kg, they are large so fish heavy leaders in the 10-12lb line class.  Make sure that your flies are bouncing the bottom and hold on tight when you hook up.

I have been lucky enough to snapper fish out of Tauranga and also get up to Mangawhai for a few days, the fishing was supreme with soft baits and slow pitch jigs out performing everything else.

Good luck and tight lines.
