Rare giant kokopu, one of five whitebait species in NZ, have been found in Waiheke Island wetlands.
This species' numbers have been in decline nationwide, so the discovery came as a surprise to Rob Morton who discovered it while pig hunting.
“I expected to see a pig but when I got closer it was actually a fish,” he says.
“I called up Matt from Auckland Council and he came over to the island a couple days later and sure enough, we found some eggs in the mud on the bank,” he says.
These fish can grow up to 35cm and feature golden speckles along their backs.
