Jarryd Craven 'Angler of the Year'

Bay of Plenty fishing club members featured prominently in this year’s NZ Sport Fishing Council’s trophy honours list.
Fisherman of the Year and Heaviest Fish of the year were won by Tauranga member Jarryd Craven, who landed a 434.5kg black marlin when livebaiting at Schooner rocks. Jarryd was fishing with his dad Vaughan and girlfriend Laura and it was his second billfish for the day, having earlier tagged and released a striped marlin in the same area using the same method.
Schooner Rock was a productive area for Tauranga Sport Fishing Club members, with Mike Pamment catching a 179.8kg striped marlin there to secure the coveted Lord Norrie Cup.
Mountain Maunganui FC’s Kane Spiers caught the first marlin of the season just a few days after it opened on August 4. Top junior honours went to Whakatane’s Wyatt Johnson.
Whangarei DSAC’s  Brenda Saul was Volunteer of the Year while the top club was Tairua Pauanui SFC.
