Bay of Island’s angler, Helen Horrocks, took away the major prize in the 2017-18 DB Export NZ Fishing Competition.

Helen's winning 53.0cm snapper was drawn from hundreds of entries, as the winner of the DB Export Ultimate Prize. Helen will be enjoying a charter trip for herself and a mate aboard Tony Orton’s Offshore Adventures, operating out of Mangawhai. She will be able to put her new Shimano jigging set to the test and then smoke the catch in her new Bradley smoker – not a bad prize for just entering!

The DB Export NZ Fishing Competition is an online fishing event which sees anglers target popular species nationwide, take a photograph of their catch against the official measure and enter via the website www.fishingcomp.co.nz

There were some remarkable fish recorded. Ross McNaughton measured an 89.5cm snapper caught in the Far North to claim champion snapper angler status. In the kingfish section, Craig Bartlett’s substantial 132cm Tasman Bay caught specimen was the top fish and pipped Spencer Roff’s 124cm effort, which had been leading for most of the season.

As well as the champion angler prizes, there are overall and monthly lucky angler draws. Major sponsor, Shimano offer a great prize which is drawn among those who include Shimano product in the photo. Luke McMeekin’s  37.5cm snapper - caught in the Sergeants Channel near Waiheke Island - earned him a top end Shimano Stella jig combo. Not a bad prize for a pannie, but that is the way this event rolls – enter and you are in with a good chance to win some significant prizes – and it is free to enter thanks to DB Export.

The most important aspect of the DB Export Competition is that the only scales involved are those on the fish! The competition has sustainability at its core, thanks to a measure and photo format. It’s the angler’s choice to release the catch or keep it and share some of our finest seafood with friends and family. That means no waste, unlike many other fishing contests where fish are killed primarily to win prizes.
