For the first time in New Zealand, a course now exists for people who are entirely new to boating, thanks to Coastguard Boating Education.

The course, aptly called Beginning Boating, enables those who are new to boating and don’t want to take charge of the boat, to get to grips with boating terminology and feel more at ease on the water. Beginning Boating is an online course available on a smartphone, tablet and desktop ensuring participants can learn at their own pace, time and location.

The course covers the basics of what to take when boating, what to do if you get seasick, the Boating Safety Code, selecting the right life jacket and the importance of planning a trip. The basics of safe speed are also covered as are some of the most common boating terms, enabling better communication and understanding between everyone on board. The course would make a good Christmas or birthday present for someone new to boating who wants to venture out in the confidence they have the basic right.
