The Taupo region is famous for trout fishing.
Over winter trout come in from the deeper waters in the lakes and head upstream to spawn. These fish are in prime condition and this is the best time for large trophy trout, both rainbow and brown.
As summer nears the spawning fish travel back to the lakes to feed and put on condition lost over the spawning period and time in the rivers. About this time smelt are abundant and are the main prey species for trout. Smelt are a shoaling species and some exciting fishing can be had when trout are rounding up schools of smelt in the shallows and at river mouths.
