Matarangi Boat Ramp is an excellent three-lane concrete boat ramp with a wharf and pontoon. After you enter Matarangi, drive along Matarangi Drive, and it is located off Harbour Drive. Due to the Whangapoua Bar, it is recommended that the ramp is used 2 hours either side of low tide. The harbour is quite protected, but care needs to be taken to follow the channel markers carefully as it is very shallow in places.
There is ample parking on the grass beside the boat ramp. Trailer parking permits are now required – you can pay for these at the ramp or at the Matarangi General Store. The permits are $80 per year or $10 per day.
There are toilets and picnic tables located near the ramp. On Matarangi Drive, there is a café and shop. Take a moment to check the photo of the bar that is posted at the ramp to help prepare for your crossing.
