NZ Fishing News February 2012

01/02/2012

It is little wonder there's some good gamefishing coverage this issue as the season begins to fire up.

There's the news of the first and the best catches to date, including the story of a monster black marlin caught near Mayor Island early in January.

Iconic Kiwi skipper Bill Hall recalls a recent reunion of the only three skippers to ever catch 10 or more marlin in a day – himself, Bob Ash and Bruce Smith. Bonze Fleet explains gamefishing’s ‘end game’, where the fish is hooked and the crew are running round like headless chickens, and how to avoid the usual pitfalls of this situation.

Editor Grant Dixon travelled halfway round the world to get among some early gamefishing action, landing some good yellowfin on baits and surface lures while in Mexico. Deputy editor mark Kitteridge, not to be outdone in the travel stakes, takes a more refined approach with his fly rod while seeking out Aitutaki’s bonefish.

Surfcaster Andy Macleod offers his keys to landbased success while reader Ben McGonigal shares a personal best kingfish off the bricks while using an old ‘eggbeater and mum’s surfcaster.

If you have been attempting to get out in the Hauraki Gulf of late and are frustrated by the ramp facilities, or rather lack of them, John Eichelsheim offers a guide to some alternatives you might like to try.

Paua, referred to by some as ‘black gold’, is the subject of one of Sam Mossman’s authoritative features this issue while Paul Senior talks about the relatively new lure techniques with some suggestions to try as the seasons change.

Other features include tips on improving your fish photography, how to successfully weigh fish you want to release, the day in the life of a fisheries HFO, some junior angling successes and recycling old soft-baits.

Adding to the above is over 30 regular features, all designed to entertain and inform NZ Fishing News readers.
