DOUBTLESS BAY SPORTFISHING CLUB

An attempt by Alf Adams, Dave Beckett and Joe De Groot to set up a Gamefishing club at Mangonui did not receive the necessary support. Another attempt was made in 1994, and after investigating possible sites that included Reserve land, James Wallis’ new extension to the Wharf Store, the offer of facilities on the wharf from the late Peter Jones and associate membership of the Mangonui Cruising Club, the Doubtless Bay Sportfishing Club was formed.

In 1997 the club was given the support of the Whangaroa Gamefish Club who donated their Haitachi hoist, digital analog weighing equipment and gallows on the Mangonui wharf.

The club had many set backs with the death of Patron Val Urlich in 1997 and committee member Earl Hassan the following year, the resignation of Mitch Mitchell (Doug McColl having to carry out the subsequent duties) , and foundation secretary Carole Texeria  and artist Merle Morrison leaving the district.

However Patron Geoff Herbert took up the reigns as President during 1999/2000 and with the strong hand of Contest Chairman Keith Kelly, computer technology from Liz & Bruce Doncaster (ex Taranaki of course), the club began to merge into the new millennium geared for the age of electronics.
