When using soft bait, that can come off the hook easily, when casting, or fishing deep. Use a strip of gummed paper, the type you have to wet to make it stick.
Wrap it around the bait and hook, and stick it to itself. After it has been in the water for a few minutes, the gum will dissolve, and the paper will float away, leaving the bait intact.
