December 2011 edition

Writtten by Grant Dixon -  editor NZ Fishing News.

Bait features prominently in the festive December edition.

Sam Mossman looks at the mackerel ‘equation’, highlighting the benefits of this great baitfish while Adam Clancey checks out a number of ways to produce fresh bait for next to no cost.

Staying on the theme but moving into gamefish, charter skipper Geoff Lamond shares his love of bait fishing with a special emphasis on the use of circle hooks.

Our cover story this month comes from a new contributor, James Brown, who checks out cubing as a way to attract big trevally both here and in the Pacific. Editor Grant Dixon has had a successful introduction to hard-bodied lures, in this instance Sebiles, and writes about yet another way to attract snapper and other species.

Lures of a bigger kind are the subject of Bonze Fleet’s feature on rigging while for the fly fishers, Tony Orman sings the praises of the copper nymph.

Once you have caught you catch, it is important it is dealt to properly. Mark Kitteridge gives readers a step-by-step lesson in filleting snapper.

Encounters of the bigger kind are the subject of the two dive features. Darren Shields offers some advice for diving shark-infested waters while Steve Hathaway shares his experiences in diving with Ingrid Visser to observe orcas.

For those who like their adventures a little further afield, there are three offshore trips covered in this issue. John Eichelsheim enjoyed a fantastic trip to Australia’s Cape York where he encountered a wide variety of species. Staying in Australia, Paul Embling highlights one of their greatest sportfish, the barramundi. Grant Dixon offers some tips on bareboat chartering for both fishing and cruising after a couple of trips to Vava’u, Tonga, where he was aboard two Moorings charters boats.

Added to the above is another in the series by Kevin Coutts on Surfcasting for Bunnies. Land based anglers will be interested to read Gary Kemsley’s story on catching big snapper off the beach while saltfly exponent Craig Worthington explains why getting there is half the fun. Steve Bryan offers some tips on reducing the load in the angler’s backpack.

The South Islands’ remote lakes are also highlighted this month with a feature on Bowscale Tarn.
