Good morning, a busy period on the water by anglers that hoped that the pressure of the holidays would be over. It was certainly a very busy weekend with groups of anglers all taking advantage of the great weather. Rivers in the fishery had had a smidgen of additional water as a result of rain that fell in the mid part of the previous week, but had left the rivers relatively clear and as a result a little harder to read.
Anglers that read the conditions enjoyed some very good fishing. There have been good numbers of fish that have moved in smallish groups over the past few days and have harboured in the lower reaches before making their way throughout the tributaries. Interesting to note that those that did fish over the weekend, who are quite familiar with the conditions did extremely well and those that have perhaps fished less often and continued to fish to the old standards found that the fishing was generally quite hard. Anglers who followed the fish that entered the tributaries in the latter part of the week, certainly did better.
We may tend to have to get used to the lower and clearer conditions as we miss out on the rain that has really eased off to the east coast and missed us completely over recent weeks. We tend to have a cold August with southerlies and frosty weather not usually a lot of rain so its going to be interesting.
Of those who were successful over the weekend, fishing the busy water and inside seams, fishing a lot lighter and maintaining sensible leader lengths and concentrating on smaller naturals has been the best tactic. Some really nice fish were caught in the Tongariro, not in the pressure points, but well away from the busy areas and the anglers that followed the fish as they moved through were well rewarded. Both the wet and the nymphers caught fish.
We have some rain in the forecast but not enough to make any real difference, I am sure with it due to turn to the south, which means snow for the ,mountains and possibly quite clear for us, we will have to wait and see.
Feel free to call for an update and or for accommodation cheers Stella 073868953
