Fishing Reports

The Store report for Jan 29-5 Feb

Good morning what a fantastic patch of weather we have enjoyed and its looking as if we are going to get another 6-7 days of perfect weather as we move into Feb. With the pressure having eased from the very busy period the real holiday makers have been able to get out onto the lakes and the rivers and really enjoy some great conditions.

We have this week, like most places in New Zealand, had thunder storms which at times have been wild and scary, but they seem to have eased off over recent nights and we have returned to the muggy, warm windless days that we are used to. The rain that has accompanied the thunder and lightning has been welcome and the rivers and lakes have appreciated the extra volume. Rivers as a result at times have coloured and in doing so fishing has taken on a different dimension. Most of the rivers have now cleared perfectly and we are back to concentrating on placing our drys once again.

Taupo river systems are all in excellent condition, little in the way of pressure and with the warm and light winds will provide some excellent opportunities over the next few days. We have up until now been happy to fish not only drys but wet and nymph as the conditions have allowed us.

Back country fishing likewise has been excellent though affected by the extra rainfall from the thunder showers, that have affected most of NZ over recent days. The back country though has held great numbers of fish and so fishing has been good, a great deal of success determined by the angler and fishing to the conditions on the day. Like all back country water there can be lots of fish but at times they are extremely difficult to get onto.

Lake fishing has eased pressure wise, but generally the weather has allowed anglers to take advantage of the better calmer conditions, fish are deeper as the lake temperatures have warmed with Jigging and deeper trolling methods working best. On the other hand its often a matter of taking your chances as the saying goes the early bird catches the worm and certainly those that have fished very early have caught reasonable numbers of fish on smelt patterns.

River mouths both off the mouths and inside are well worth a cast or look as the pressure eases.

Feel free to give us a call for an update or accommodation anytime,
Cheers Pete and Stella,
