Fishing ReportsThe Espresso Report
Crowded House4 Seasons In One Day they sang, and this just about sums up most things out on the big blue wobbly thing yet again at the moment. The water temperature has hot spots and some equally cold spots, the winds have been on again/off again, showers and sunshine within mere hours and the fishing is just following suit. If you’ve picked the right time and place, the fishing has been magic, if not, it’s…not. Cold water and indifferent fish have frustrated many out there this past week, along with mirage-like workups, Dolphins that just want to snack, smile wryly at you and have fun while the Whales feeding on Krill means Snapper are not necessarily in attendance. This can mean a lot of frustrating times and confused looks on the faces of many experienced and novice fisho’s alike. These conditions can often be a great leveler and a rather harsh ego-check. But I reckon this is what makes fishing…fishing. It’s all good. DiscriminationDespite somewhat fickle fishing the spawning is well underway and most fish are eager and brimming. Most species are bursting with antici……………......................... .................................pation.
SmorgasbordThe fishing buffet is plentiful and varied, with so much to choose from it’s a delight to be out there soaking up some of the most enjoyable aspects of life – unequaled scenery, mild weather, thrills of fish hunting and the bounty that can be enjoyed by all once back on the hard lumpy stuff. With a little bit of thought, a dollop of patience (not too much), and a handful of cunning there’s so much to be gained from a few hours fishing at this time of year. For example just yesterday I promised to take a mate Bruce out for a fish, he had just bought his new and inexpensive Soft Bait setup and needed to get a fishing-fix. So out we went and he came home with a number of each of these fish firsts, first time up. Got to be good for you. And Now?At the moment I’d tend to stay in closer around the islands of the Waitemata and Hauraki rather than heading out wider. The main open areas of the Gulf can be pretty lean right now, better sized fish and more plentiful supplies are around the southern Kawau islands, and over by the channels around the Motutapu-Rakino area. A good moon phase and two or three short bite times are happening per day too, so either a hunt around with the Soft Plastics until you cotton-on to them, or a burley-up throwing out half Pillies and tasty chunks of Squid can provide some good very results! Cheers.
