4.8.08 - surfcasting - Plenty of spiney dogs and red cod and a few tope and spotty sharks in Palliser bay. Gurnard and kahawai in Lyall bay.

1.8.08 - I had reports of snapper in the harbour, warehou, , good blue cod (although I didn't get any in the weed when the water was really dirty), Terakihi off Kau Bay and Choccy Fish. The Trench was apparently hard fishing early last week.. 
 
From Pete lamb - the weather hasn't been the best but it can oml;y improve. There are still some nice fish around for those willing to wrap up. Wait for the good day and give it a crack.

It is a great time of the year for blue cod and terakihi fishing from the boat and kahawai, spotty shark and red cod fishing from the shore. In the deeper water, the blunose and bass fish well through the winter along with small puka, big ling and porbeagle sharks.

Bluefin tuna season is on top of us and we will be exploring off the Wairarapa coast, Cook strait and Palliser canyon for bluefin and broadbill this winter. We also plan to go to the Hokitika trench direct from Wellington for the northern bluefin run expected in august - sept.

New marine reserve on Capital’s doorstep

 Conservation Minister Steve Chadwick has announced the establishment of a new marine reserve on Wellington’s scenic south coast.

The Taputeranga Marine Reserve - 854 ha - encompassing Owhiro and Island Bay, Princess and Houghton Bays, and extends 2.3 km out to sea and 3.3 km along Wellington’s south coast. Notice of the reserve was published today in the New Zealand Gazette and the no-take protections will come into force in 28 days time.
