Fishing ReportsBest Western Braeside Resort Fishing ReportEarly on Saturday morning three hundred and eighty keen anglers converged on Lake Rotorua to try their luck in the Rotorua Classic Tagged Trout Tournament. Their main aim was to land one of the twenty specifically tagged trout that had been released earlier in the week. The weather conditions were not ideal with a strong southerly breeze persisting for most of the weekend which made trolling a challenge for most anglers.
Despite the hiccup with the weather a large number of fish were caught over the weekend however none of the twenty tagged trout were landed by any of the competing anglers. This opened up the opportunity for any competitor to take home the $6000 drawn cash prize and the lucky angler this year was Mrs Hunuhunu but the family luck didn’t stop there, her husband Sonny also picked up a prize for catching a trout with a Fish and Game tag.
Overall the majority of the fish that I saw were in great condition and this was confirmed with the trout winning the best condition factor prize coming in with a condition factor of 66.6. This fish was landed by Kevin Jensen. The weekend was a huge success with the Rotorua Coastguard and Tertiary Scholarships being the two charities to benefit from the tournament. A big thank you must go to the organising committee from the Rotorua North Rotary Club.
The deluge of rain that we received last week has refreshed the area and now the local streams are clearing and becoming fishable again. There has been an increase in activity in the Ngongotaha Stream with fish being taken on both small nymphs and egg patterns. The soft zygote pattern has been extremely popular. The recent rain has also produced an increase in action at the mouths and lower reaches of the Ngongotaha and Waiteti streams with both small nymphs and smelt patterns being effective here.
The shoreline fishing at LakeTarawera is finally showing signs of life with the angle jetty at the Landing being the main focus at present. There appears to be a good number of smelt in the area which is a good indication that the spawning fish will follow. It will also be worth having a fish off any of the jetties along RangiuruBay and Stony Point as good numbers of smelt are also congregating in these areas. I would recommend trying small smelt patterns or another option for holiday makers is the Heave and Leave Glo Bug.
Jigging is still a worthwhile option on LakeTarawera with the Green Orbit and Mini Green Rabbit being the flies of choice. Twin Streams, Humphreys Bay and Stump Bay are all worth targeting.
