Fishing Reports
The Store Report for Tuesday 29th May 2001
Well it’s hard to believe that all the rainfall that fell on Thursday and Friday is still very much evident today!
The Hatepe, which is spring fed and almost always certain to fish when every other river is out, has proved that it too suffers at times. The rainfall is obviously affecting the dam levels and its still spilling water today. This was very much evident in the volume and colour that the stream presented mid morning, when I viewed it above the road bridge. There were certainly a number of anglers who persevered, fishing the edges and backwater, finding a number of fish but not great numbers. Obviously a number of fish were moving into the river despite the conditions. It’s hard to know whether the river will be clearer tomorrow, it just depends on whether the spilling over the top dam stops.
The volume of rainfall has affected all the steams with the Waimarino and Waiotaka still presenting volume and colour today. Every hour without rainfall allows them to clear quietly and encourages some fresh movement of fish. Today has a good feeling about it.
The Tongariro is high and is expected to still have an extra 10 cumics tomorrow. Obviously the Hydro system is continuing to sluice the top dam while the extra volume of water is in the river. Once the dam flow stops, and the water clears, the fish will certainly be within the reach of the angler. Concentrate on the wetline water and take care fishing the heavier water, as it shows no mercy.
The Tauranga Taupo still has a great deal of extra volume, which is hard to believe, as it’s now 3 full days since the rainfall. However, the colour and condition of the water is just perfect. Late yesterday afternoon saw the river begin to clear quite dramatically. I fished the lower river, where it was hard to get a good drift due to the volume, but under pressure we managed to hook into a number of fish in absolutely beautiful condition. Tuesday will see the river fish a little easier whereas today the volume was such that it was hard to fish even the seams of water.
Take care when crossing the rivers as the volume of water changes the bottom of the rivers quickly and there can be unexpected debris left in the wake of the flood. It never fails to amaze that anglers are prepared to cross the river when the volume is so immense. Certainly one or two got real frights today! If you are determined to cross, do so with the current, and preferably with a buddy who has a weight belt on!
The stream mouths, especially the Delta and the T/T, have provided a haven for fish waiting to move when the conditions are right. Those anglers frustrated by the river conditions who have fished inside the river mouths or off to the side of the dirty water with sinking lines and a glow bug, Green Woolly Bugger, or small Black Rabbit have done well. No a great pressure from other anglers and heaps of rip to fish right along the beach.
