Good morning this report is specially for Barry, Barry it's raining and the fish are enjoying a little additional water and colour as I write. They expect to be joined by a few other fish that are keen to run up the rivers over the next few days but it may take a moment or two for the water levels and the colour to ease.
I talked to some of my friends on the otherside of the lake and they tell me that the fish have enjoyed taking turns feeding off smelt, both fresh and false, near some of the smaller stream mouths.
Fishing may have to be put on the back burner for a day or so with rivers and streams begining to rise due to the heavy rain falling accross our catchment. Most rivers in the taupo area and back country will be affected for a day or so, but it will mean as they drop away and the volume and colour eases we should be able to enjoy some great fishing.
River mouths have had little pressure but for those that have fished both during the day off the smaller streams and those that have fished the heavier volumed mouths early morning and night the fish have been moving. There have been some really nice well-conditioned fish caught and released which is fantastic. The fish are all in excellent condition and they are all of average size, 40-50cm which is a sign that the fishery is in good order. There is a significant number of smelt in the southern lake at present, but they tend to move with the wind and the fish will follow.
We tend to get little pressure with the lead up to christmas and its a nice time to fish if teh conditions allow, check with an update if you need.
Lake fishing will be a bit bumpy for a time but with the weather eases to the latter part of the weekend fishing will improve.
