Good morning, well at long last the blustery wind has finally eased and we can put the washing on the line and expect it to stay there rather than be in Wellington by lunchtime! The past couple of days have seen settled weather, sunshine and generally perfect fishing conditions. The rivers are all very low and clear due to the fact that we haven’t had any sort of rain now for some time. As a result the conditions are relatively tough. The fact of the matter is it’s not that there are not fish in the rivers but that they are hard to get onto which is to be expected at this time of the year.
Those that have fished the lower reaches of the rivers fishing the fast and busy water have done best. Fishing into shallow, broken water that is quite cold, which happens at this time of the year, has been the best option. Fish that have been holding at the mouths have moved into the lower reaches have encountered little pressure from anglers and tend to stay there a bit longer.
The first of Dec heralds the opening of the upper sections of all the rivers and there will be a number of anglers that will take advantage of the opening, however fishing lower or middle reaches maybe the best value at present.
Fishing at the river mouths has been governed by the wind but if you pick the nights with a drop in barometric pressure or those that are cooler you’ll get better results.
Lake fishing esp Lake O has been tempered by the wind but as conditions improve and you’re able to fish the surface again, some warmth from extended periods of sunshine will help.
Lake Taupo has also recovered from its surf like conditions and has finally settled. Fish have started to move back to the surface and actively feeding on smelt. Fish shallow early and later with bright lures and a deeper through the middle of the day with a Black Toby the old faithful.
Take care on the water and feel free to call for an update anytime cheers Stella and Pete 073868953
