Opening Day, its only 3 more sleeps until the new season starts for a large number of our regions waterways. This is something many of us have been anticipating since the day they closed. Unfortunately the weather forecast is complete crapola, but fingers very crossed that met-service have got it wrong again and we can get out there for a fish over the weekend. (Don’t forget your new licence!)
Fishing on the Ohinemuri and Waitawheta rivers have been fairly consistent recently with plenty of fish ‘looking up’ and taking the dry fly, best results have come from a generic mayfly pattern (size 14-16) fished under a Grey CDC Comparadun (size 12). Yoshi from Rod and Reel has apparently been doing very well on the Ohinemuri with his X-Factor fly.
However, if you are fishing the dry and dropper rig I would recommend making your length between the dry and the nymph fairly short, as there is an enormous amount of slimy weed about, particularly on the Waitawheta.
The Waikato tributaries that are currently open continue to fish well, so hopefully this bodes well for the area in general post October 1st. Only one way to find out…
