The Fishwhisperer Report

24th May

Well, as they say, it’s been a long time between drinks. Sorry about the fact that there has been no report on the Waikato / Auckland area. Neither I, nor any of my fishing friends have been fishing the area over the last 5 weeks. We have all been concentrating our efforts on the Rotorua regions trout, and the odd snapper hunt.

However, right now is probably a great time to hit the Waikato tributaries and the Hydro Lakes.

If you are at one of the Hydro Lakes then positioning your boat near one of the streams that enter the Lake will put you in a good position to intercept trout on their way to a romantic river rendezvous. These pre-spawning fish are normally in prime condition and can be quite aggressive, so often a brightly coloured fly, like the Red Setter, can be effective. But really, it’s a matter of giving the fish some options. If one fly / depth fished / speed of retrieve is not working then change it until you find the right recipe for that particular location.

As far as the many streams are concerned most of the fish will still take natural nymph patterns but if you find some that just won’t take anything you put in the water then try throwing a Glo Bug at them. At this time of year it really is surprising how often Trout that appear well and truly spooked will aggressively move to take that irritating little ball of orange fluff.

Tight Lines – and if anyone has a report they want to share please send it on in to me or load it on our forums.
