We have just experienced a week of above average fishing in the winter fishing calendar, rain still falling over the past week, and we are now seeing the frost we have waited for. A lot of fishermen came to Rotorua for the long weekend, mostly boat fishermen, with a few fly fishermen scattered amongst them.
We have our regular contingency of Aussie (Melbourne) fishermen arrive (some still to come). Those who are here have shown great enthusiasm, their unmistakable voices heard in several locations at night. Good luck boys, enjoy your stay.
Most of the reports coming in show a good number of fishermen are catching plenty of fish but most say the fish size is down this week. Think this should improve with subsequent frosts.
There is still a very strong showing of keen fishermen at most places including Okataina, Tarawera and Rotoiti, to name a few. One location which has us puzzled is the Ohau Channel which has been very quiet with only a few catches reported, considering the water flow, we would have expected a much higher catch rate.
The Rotorua streams are still producing some nice catches and Glo Bugs are the flavour of the week.
Rerewhakaaitu is fishing very well as is the Rangitaki and Whirinaki.
All in all a good weeks fishing, fingers crossed for a similar result this week.
Just remember if its good enough for the CEO of Telecom to be out there fishing, it’s good enough for us !!!!
