“KIWI GOES TO BARRIER” - April 2002

“KIWI GOES TO BARRIER” April 20th & 21st – Whangaparapara – Great Barrier Island Newcomer, Sing Wong (but hey, just call me ‘Kiwi’) caught his personal best Snapper, a truly excellent 5.68kg ‘monster-in-the-making’, beating his previous best Snapper of 4kg. “Its a bit different to boat fishing ‘eh’ kiwi!” Goodonya mate! Ok, that’s the ‘Kiwi’ mentioned. Now for the ‘Spring Boks’ – Peter, Paul and Paul. Peter, Paul and Paul???????????????????????? Crikey! If one of the Pauls changed his name to ‘Mary’ we’d have a rock group! Yes, right, well, ummmmmmm, errrrrrr, needless to say…these guys hijacked the kayaks and paddled headlong into great fishing country. ‘E’ for effort, lads! Oh, and from what Peter Kay tells me…if the ones that got away, didn’t, the Trevs might not have even got a place. Next Time, lads…next time!!!!!!!!!!!!. Speaking of ‘Peter Kay’, this young man is not the Spring Bok he used to be. Apparently (as well-founded rumour would have it), he lost his spring and sprang rather unintentionally into the sea. “Bok this for a joke”, he was heard to say afterwards! Other items of note include: Trevor Savory for catching a 13.66kg Snapper. The fish of a life-time, well you would think so until he tells you (in an almost casual way) that he has ‘caught bigger’ - 14.19kg bigger, if you please! (You clever so and so!) Another meritorious effort goes to Bruce Smeaton for actually managing to get all his gear on one plane WITHOUT forcing paying passengers to stay behind! As for Ails and myself, well we managed a really light trip back – one miserable, lousy fish for all our time and effort. Bugger!!! Thanks to the sponsors: Dennis Mendoza at Great Barrier Lodge and HPM Ltd. With their donation they helped to create a (great) Great Barrier trip. Great Barrier Lodge gave two nights free accommodation for another trip. Steve Boyd won this with a 4.12kg Snapper; the actual mystery weight was 3.73kg. Julie Scott missed out by 0.02grams. Julie’s fish weighed 3.32kg (did you need one anyway? – Na) Dennis also donated 3 shirts and hats for Sunday’s 1st, 2nd and 3rd placing. Well done to Ails for asking HPM to donate prizes like beanies, caps & drink bottles. These were given for spot prizes & stories. Everyone who was there on Friday night entered a $10 sweep for the biggest fish on Saturday. The only species of fish that qualified were the Premier Fish such as Kingfish, Snapper, Trevally and Kahawai. The prizes were cash amounts of $100, $40, and $30 respectively. Results Saturday 1st Trevor Savory 13.66kg Snap 2nd Trevor Davidson 8.58kg Snap 3rd Trevor Davidson 7.56kg Snap Sunday 1st Sing Wong (Kiwi) 5.68kg Snap 2nd Paul Filtham 4.76kg Snap 3rd Steve Boyd 4.12kg Snap Next trip to Barrier was suggested that we challenge the locals. It sounds good to me. What do you think? If anyone has any ideas about how it should be done, please tell ASAP. I trust everyone who went on the last trip had good fun. I know Ails and I did! (The fishing wasn’t bad either…*grins wickedly*). Cheers & Tight Lines Pete M.
