Fishing Reports
Update from around Wellington and top of the sth.
WEST COAST - OHAU POINT TO KAPITI
boat
The best two snapper caught of late have been a 21 pounder from the plimmerton quarry and a 28lber down from makara.
The weather and the fishing has been a bit patchy since xmas. Most of our days out fishing on the west have been in spots sheltering out of the swell and weather.
We had one ok day on the snapper at the north end of mana island but overall it has been hard fishing. Most people I have been talking to have caught snapper on their trips but often just one or two. Our best
day a plimmerton yeilded john dory, gurnard, blue cod, kahwai, congers but alas no snapps.
Some days when the fish have been really biting limit bags od snapps have been caught, especially from paikakariki northwards.
The usual good tarakihi and blue cod down has been going on north and south of makara and there was a nice trumpeter around 5kgs caught at ohau point last weekend by one of the WSAC club members. On my
last trip to pukerua bay, we left a spot because the tide was running too hard and a friend who stayed caught 4 nice snapper just afterwood. We got ïcongeredÍ out at my hotspot, went back to the other spot ,
caught nothing and finally nailed a nice 12lb snap just off the plimmerton quarry right on dusk.
When the conditions have been good there have been some kingfish caught out at hunters but I havenÍt heard of specific captures. Heaviest king I have heard of is still a 33kger taken at the ïsouthern endÍ of Kapiti on 15kg B.S.L.
The bridge in between mana and titahi bay has been good for kahawai but patchy for snapps and no trevs to speak of. This may all change by the time you are reading this.
The most consistant catches are groper at the usual ïout wideÍ spots like makara, fishermans, 78mtr rise, out wide from hunters. A crew from the dive spot apparantly saw a 6mtr white shark at fishermens
a wee while ago. Water temp has fluctuated between 11.5 and 18 degrees. On a recent charter to fishermans we caught a cople of nice pukas and a good trumpeter. A friend of the boat owner went back in the
afternoon
Over the next month or two there should be good oportunities for albacore tuna out wide and who knows what else. If the water temp is 18 deg plus then a yellowfin or marlin maybee on the cards. It is
certainly worth trolling and livebaiting on any of the offshore rocks and pinnacles during the next while.
shore fishing
Kingfish have been seen but as far as I am aware not caught yet.
The big rock at pukerua bay Ü wiraki point, Paremata harbour, Boom rock are the best know places to target such a fish. A few snapper have been caught around the fishermans table and the usual eagle and
stingrays have been abundant.
I have seen a number of people fishing around the plimmerton quarry area lately. They have been catching kahawai, congers, the odd blue cod and the occaisional snapper
There has been a good run of gurnard lately from beaches south of makara. A few snapper have been caught around titahi bay and north makara.
WELLINGTON HARBOUR
The harbour fishing can run hot and cold. It seems to go better when the water is clean. After a big rain some of the quality fish go off the bite. It is a pleasant place to fish without too much travelling time and
can turn on excellent fishing from time to time.
Boat
Rumors of a 70lb kingi caught from the north end of somes island, havnÍt heard from the source yet to confirm. ItÍs the only good kingfish story so far out of the harbour this season.
Shore fishing
A 24lb snapper was caught around early jan along the cobham drive stretch and 2 x 10lbers were caught from greta point around the same time. There have been many small snapper taken
but not so many legal size ones. There was a run of blue moki in the 2nd week on jan. heard of 3 caught at miramar, 3 at mahanga bay and a 19lber caught at karaka bay wharf Ü ray from my shop witnessed
this one.
A nice elephant fish was caught off oriental bay a couple of weeks ago Ü about 12 lbs.
A club member saw 2 or 3 kingis near burnham wharf recently.
SOUTH COAST - CAPE TERAWHITI TO CAPE PALLISER
Shore
Ü no reports to speak of
Boat
Ü NicholsonsÍs trench Ü WeÍve had about 4 or 5 trips out there during january with mixed results. Some days have been good on bluenose some a bit tough. A few Pukas but nothing too staggering. Heard of
a good swag taken outside of the harbour entrance probably off the back of 5 mile reef. The best bluenose fishing has been inbetween baring head and terakarei. Heard of a big mako hooked out from island bay
recently.
Had some nice bass and puka from the spot out infront of theharbour entrance recently. Dave wood (who I used to do charters with) caught a 80lb bass from the far side. That is the 2nd biggie I have heard of
caught from there. Some good bluenose have also been caught on the other side of the trench, I think the western end.
EAST CAPE Ü LBG REPORT
Had an entertaining trip fishing on the matakoa station in early janurary.
Had 4 clients with me staying at the shearers cottage (singlemans batch). The first day we fished infront of the woolshed and caught live kahawai fairly quickly in the morning.
15 Ü 30lb kingis were coming into the berley trail from time to time but wold not take a bait. Then a livey got nailed by a 40 Ü 50lb kingi. One of the guys struck hard and the king was striping off line then
went slack, bugger, the hook was not set properly and the kingi dissappeared. Later one we got another chance, this one was one of the biggest kingis we have hooked off the rocks, probably over 35kgs, maybe
40 +. It was stripping off 37kg under almost full drag. The livebait was a good 3kg one. ïTinyÍ , all 6ft 11 of him could make no impact on this fish.
We saw yellowfin jumping as well as moonfish , a couple of big sharks and a possible marlin on the trip
MARLBOROUGH SOUNDS
Heard nothing
WAIRARAPA
Been good and bad, the ngawi compeition went well as can be expected after a big southerly blow, at least they got out later on Saturday and all Sunday. Biggest mako Ü 190kg, puka 30kg, small kings and
albacore, usual trumpeter blue cod and tarakihi. Good fishing by normal standards, not so good for the normal hot fishing over there.
Castlepoint comp on soon Ü will update you when I here.
regards,
Pete Lamb
