Fishing Reports
Wellington Report
WEST COAST - OHAU POINT TO KAPITI
Boat
Good catches of groper have been reported from out wide of Mana Island, the 78mtr rise, Fisherman’s Rock and out from Hunters Bank. The largest reported so far is 42kg caught on marinowai. A couple of mates have caught big numbers of groper but many have been schoolies.
No reports of kingis, but it must only be a matter of time before Hunters Bank or the Boulder Bank (nth end of Kapiti) start producing a few. The only kingfish I have heard of is a 12kg specimen caught at the south end of Kapiti.
Hunters bank has been producing the big trevally and quite a few of them too. You will get good results by fishing a bit north of Hunters in about 80 - 100 metres (just on the edge of the foul). XOS tarakihi, school groper, trevs and big blue cod are expected in this area as well as the odd surprise.
Most people anchor up or drift the shallow parts of Hunters (30 - 50mtrs). This is ok for a few trevs, the occasional good catch of tarakihi and sometimes kingfish, but is generally hard fishing. The best techniques in the shallow are to berley up a storm, put out livebaits, strayline pillies and jig or throw poppers.
Pukerua Bay has been producing snapper. Try 25-50 metres on the sand.
Makara - John Dory have been turning up over the last month. We have had 3 to 3.3kgs recently. The shallow water (20 - 30mtrs) has been more consistent for tarakihi and blue cod than the deeper water (60 - 80mtrs). This could all change though the next time you go out. Had some good tarakihi out from Boom Rock in about 70mtrs recently.
Kapiti - no reports from JT Fish lately, I presume the fishing has been good around Kapiti but haven’t heard anything.
Shore Fishing
No official reports from this area. Boom is always worth a crack during the day but the best time is certainly the first and last couple of hours of the day, especially on an incoming tide and in a light northerly. You can get there by walking an hour or two north of Makara beach. Warning - the stream at Makara is tricky to cross on the full tide.
For surfcasters, there is a good chance of trevally, tarakihi and spotted sharks on the sandy shingle beaches, especially after dark and on the high tide. Makara, Opau and Te Ikamaru bays are all good spots. The first snapper and kingfish are on the cards, especially around Pukerua Bay, Fisherman’s Table or Boom Rock. Who’s going to be first this season? I would be interested to find out any captures from the shore in this area.
WELLINGTON HARBOUR
Boat
The snapper are in. Heard of a few sly catches but the experts are keeping schtung about where they are catching them. Evan’s Bay and Ngauranga as well as Falcons Shoal, the Satellite Dish and south end of Somes Island are all spots worth trying. The elephant fish are still getting caught in the Seatoun-Eastborne area. Gurnard again are going well throughout the harbour. A few trevally are getting caught at the harbour entrance.
Shore fishing
Heard of a 20lb snapper ‘lost’ at Miramar recently, probably no gaff. Quite a few shoalies are getting caught throughout Evans Bay as well as good gurnard. Cobham Drive on the high tide around dusk or after, with a northerly blowing, is a good recipe for snapps. The northerly keeps the water skiiers at bay. The high tide brings the fish into casting range. Some warehou were getting caught off Queens Wharf after dark about a month or so ago, haven’t heard if they are still around.
SOUTH COAST - CAPE TERAWHITI TO CAPE PALLISER
Shore
Good numbers of moki are west of the harbour entrance, especially around past Red Rocks through to Oteranga Bay. This is the best time of the year to catch em so go out and get into it. The key factors are - no southerly swell, high tide, dawn or dusk, kina/cray/mussel berley and plenty of it, short casts on a shingle beach and on the edge of a weed bank. Fresh mussel, cray, paua gut or crab tied onto about a 1 or 2/0 hook. Persevere through the banded parrotfish and strike at anything.
A few nice trevs, gurnard and spotty sharks are getting caught as well. A couple of trevs have been caught off the rocks in between Houghton and Princess Bay recently, and also in Fitzroy Bay.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the beach at the bottom of Karori Stream will produce some nice trevs as well. This time last year that area was producing a few salmon as well.
Boat
THE TRENCH is firing on all cylinders, as long as the weather allows you to get out there. This side (out from the harbour entrance) is producing numbers of bluenose. The other side is relatively quite on b/nose but full on with pukas. We have had 40 in the last 2.5 trips. The fish are small, up to 40lb. A friend caught 18 bluenose and 6 pukas this side of the trench off Baring head recently.
Ling are prolific in the deep and the odd bass have been thrown in for good measure.
INSHORE FISHING hasn’t been as good, but the weather has played an important hand in this. The water has been dirty in close which normally puts the fish off. Clean water = good fishin. My pick of the inshore spots is Terakarei Head, for monster blue cod, tarakihi, with the odd warehou, trev and trumpeter thrown in. You never know what to expect down there.
We caught some good blue cod in close at Wainui, when it was too windy to fish anywhere else recently. It would certainly be worth fishing in 100 - 120 mtrs down around Sinclair Head to Karori light over the next few months for trumpeter and puka. The turn of the tide is important otherwise you loose heaps of gear. As with most spots you drift at, breakaway sinkers are good if you don’t want to loose heaps of traces.
EAST COAST - WAIRARAPA
Boat
When the weather has allowed, the usual puka, trumpeter, big blue cod and tarakihi have been good right up and down the coast. Don’t hear too much from this coast though, unfortunately. When the weather is right the fishing seems to be always good. However, where the charter boats are prolific, the fish have gone deeper. I have had reports of Urity Bank and spots off Ngawai suffering a bit from fishing pressure… any comments from you guys over there???
Shore
White Rock has been producing gurnard and spotty sharks (rig) when the water is clean, but has not been as good as the last two seasons, yet!!! Perfect time for a LBG kingi at Castlepoint. There is also potential for salmon at Lake Ferry or a big shark using the kite from western lakes/ocean beach area. You have a very good chance at a puka in this location using a kite to get your bait 1000 metres or so offshore. Using circle hooks and superbraid would be an advantage for this kind of fishing.
